Russian Sambo wrestling is a composite style of jacket wrestling originally developed in Russia to serve as a common form of sport wrestling. It was also used as a form of hand-to-hand combat preparation and training by Soviet military. Russian Sambo today is practiced in two flavors: Sport Russian Sambo and Combat Russian Sambo, a method of self-defense training. The combat style of Russian Sambo seems to fall more into the old school self defense category. We suggest students looking for street fighting skills look at Vale-Tudo style training if they are interested in reality self defense. Sport Sambo however is a very effective method of fighting with the kimono. It techniques are very effective and can be used by sport Jiu-jitsu players and Judo players alike. Russian Sambo leglocks widely considered the most effective leglocks in the world and almost every style of grappling now incorporates Sambo into their art one way or another.
